The Baby Daily Car Seat Advocacy Event

This weekend, The Baby Daily held our second annual car seat check event. With the help of some fabulous Safe Kids Idaho volunteers we checked over 120 car seats and seat belts in just two days!!! It was great to see all the parents come out concerned about the safety of their kids. Moms, Dads, Grandmas and Grandpas flocked to the event and were educated on car seat safety. Some seats were old, some recalled, and many misused, creating a very unsafe situation for the kids.  No worries, we got kids new seats, seats installed correctly, resulting in lots of smiles and happy faces.

Just like last year, The Baby Daily incentified the event by donating 100 FREE booster seats to the families you participated in the event. A small price to pay when I know that we have over 100 kids safer on Idaho roads. I would like to thank all our volunteers for their help and concern for our local kids. GREAT JOB TEAM!!!

Shop For Change

The below article provided by babyproductexperts.com provides insight as to why it is important to shop local, small business versus the big box. It encourages readers to change their spending habits as the long term effect is well worth it. Read it and let me know your thoughts.

There’s a national movement afoot to encourage people to change their habits and do more to support their local independent retailers. In fact, your state or municipality may even have developed their own grassroots movements to encourage you to buy locally and to ensure that sales tax revenues remain in your own backyard.

It may be hard to pass up that great bargain at the “big box” store down the road or on the Internet. For the most part, these groups aren’t asking you to.They are just asking that you include your local retailers in your shopping mix and make sure that your community gets its fair share of tax revenues from products you purchase.

Did you know that when you buy from local retailers instead of at corporate chains, up to three times more money stays in the local economy? Grand Rapids, Michigan performed a civic economics study in 2008 that showed that a simple 10% shift in market share from chains to local retailers could result in nearly $140 million in new economic activity, over 1600 new jobs, and over $50 million in new wages in their community alone.

As we covered in an earlier article (Surprise Package: Inside Your Local Baby Store, June 2010), local retailers also provide good and often higher paying jobs for local workers, better service to customers, and more investment in the community.

The issue with buying on the Internet primarily comes down to sales tax. Who pays it, who gets it and when. Over $150 billion is spent online by shoppers annually, and only when the online retailers have a presence in a particular state is sales tax charged. This represents a loss of billions of dollars in tax revenues to our financially strapped states and

local municipalities.

If you live in a state that collects sales tax, you are technically required to pay tax to your state on every online purchase you make. When an Internet retailer doesn’t collect sales tax on your purchase, you are still responsible for claiming it on your state income tax form as a “use” tax.

How many of us really do this, or even know we are supposed to? Up to now, most states have not been overly zealous in enforcing this tax for smaller purchases, but times are changing.

The state of New York, for example, has a dedicated line on income tax returns requiring all residents to calculate how much they should pay on Internet, mail order and out-of-state purchases. California has been running a campaign to educate taxpayers on what’s owed. Congress has also recently entered a bill to require that state sales tax be added to all products purchased over the Internet.

If you think this is a bad thing, consider this. Enforcing a “use” or consumption tax for those consumers who purchase goods over the Internet means additional money circulating in your local economy, more jobs saved, improved/expanded municipal and community services, lower property and local sales tax, and more money back in your pocket.

One of these nationwide movements,The 3/50 Project, offers a simple formula to help you get started. Just commit to spend at least $50 of your monthly budget shopping at locally owned businesses.

They recommend that you select three favorite local businesses to patronize. Put your local Baby Product Experts affiliated store on your list, and we will help your budget go even further with our monthly Baby Bucks and Great Deals coupons and rebates.

Is Summer Over Yet?

I like summer…I like vacation and being outdoors and the swimming and BBQ, but I really need my kids to go back to school. No judgment please, but it has just been very hard to manage my 4 active kids, my out of town husband and my businesses. I feel extremely guilty I can’t give my business more of my time. I feel any failure is a direct relationship to me not being there enough.

I decided I would be more hands on this summer with the kids and not hire a babysitter. The stores are in capable hands and it will give me some time to re-connect with family, friends and personal projects. Well I am seriously counting the days until summer is over. I miss work, I miss help with the kids. I could have hired someone but I HATE spending the money on child care when I don’t REALLY have to plus I really wanted to be around the kids more this summer.

Example. I decide to take the kids and dog for a bike ride today, my kids are 10, 8 and 7 year old twins. We get there with only one child crying the entire way and only one child crying all the way back. Fairly successful though after trying to go over the rules of the road and bike safety as we are walking through the neighborhood, my untrained puppy pulling at my arm and my phone ringing, I can’t help but feeling pulled in a zillion directions. All I want at that point is to get home get the dog and kids put away…nice right…and pull out my computer, phone and get working. My heart starts pounding, my blood pressure spikes, I can feel my fuse getting shorter. This is stress and anxiety and it does not matter what I do, I can’t get away from it.

Finding the balance of being home most days during the summer with the kids and still having ownership of a business is hard. Some days, like today, I wish I could tuck business away and just focus on the kids and family and my home…but who am I kidding, I would get bored.

This Recession Bites!

I believe I am with most people stating that this recession bites…BIG TIME and I don’t have any hope what so ever it is going to get better soon. Sorry to disappoint but anyone crossing their fingers may as well just hunker down a bit more. As a retailer of small business I came to this realization after 18 of some of the hardest months in business I have ever had.

Its not just fewer people and smaller sales that make times tough, it is also people. People are in general angrier, more frustrated and short fused….all in all stressed out to the max. It has made business doublely hard because working with the general public has been that much more stressful.

I can see to a point where some people are coming from, but all those people out there that take their stress out on a perfect stranger in the form of belligerent screaming or crying is really unacceptable. I don’t know how many times I am put through extremely stressful situations in my business dealing with incompetent manufacturers, reps, customers coming out of left field, and not once can I think of a time I have taken my stress and frustration out in the form of yelling, swearing, throwing things and carrying on in that way.

Just some friendly advise I learned a long time ago…diplomacy goes a LOOONNNGGG way and people tend to work harder for people they respect i.e are kind and humble.

PS…Thank you to all our WONDERFUL customers who are supportive, enthusiastic and CALM.

Drop Side Cribs Recall

Click on the link below for the latest updates on drop side cribs and the potential risks in using them.  A lot of it is commons sense, like don’t duct tape the crib when it breaks! Read below and hopefully the article will offer some insights on what you can do if you own or are using one of these cribs.

I love my customers……most days

I will tell you what, there are people out there that really take the cake for making my life very challenging, not to mention my business.  I am speaking about the general public.  I find that many people see it as a right and not a privilege to shop at The Baby Daily.  I have created something for my local customers to shop and enjoy themselves. What I get in return is often just plain rudeness and entitlement! Don’t get me wrong, most of my customers are wonderful supporters. We do have a list going of everyone we would like to ban from walking in the door.  If you think you may be one of them keep reading!

I have customers all the time that try and nickel and dime my business on EVERYTHING. There is this misconception that the margin is just soooooo huge that we are making a killing….WRONG! Every percent that I reduce prices for the fun of it is right off the top and their aint much up there to begin with.

I ask this question….do you walk into a big box store like Wal Mart, Target, Sears, Home Depot, or Nordstrom and ask for a better deal? If not, why would you walk into a Mom and Pop and ask? Small business is often making much less margin than the big box businesses, offer better customer service and put more money right back into the local economy in comparison to the big box stores. We are expected to offer perfect customer service, work on a tighter margin, and still offer a better deal. Where’s the loyalty here!  If everyone just tried to support one local business a week or even a month, it would make a huge difference in the landscapes of our city’s.

Take a look at this video and you will see what I mean. I think many people can relate to the vendors in these situations.  I get this type of customer often enough to make me very cynical.

“You Are Fired” It’s Hard For All Involved

Uggggh…I hate firing employees, even those employees who REALLY deserve it. I don’t know why? I guess I can empathize with all people even those who don’t deserve a position in my business. I also think part of it is that employees are often different around the owners than they are around other staff. Employees tend to work hard, are team players, and hustle when the owner is in the room but the second the owner is gone their work ethic falls way off. I also think a poor hire is a reflection on the person who did the hire, and in turn a refelection on me.

My advise…when you think you have an employee that does not fit your business, you start having fantasy’s of your business without this person, it is time to cut the cord.  It will be hard, maybe even nauseating,  but in the end you will be so relieved and the most important thing of all you will end up saving money in the long run!

New Year & New Direction for The Baby Daily Blog

With the start of a New Year I wanted to give this blog a new direction. I am totally ready to shut the door on 2009 and look fresh and optimistic into 2010! Instead of the normal writing of products, issue, recalls etc I am going to to write about the joys, frustrations, and down right headaches of owning a business and raising a family.  Hopefully this blog will connect more with Moms and Dads who are business owners or considering it. Some people just want to know how the heck I manage it all. That’s a great question and the answer is “I just do…usually in a stressed out haze”! Maybe you can decipher my crazy life better than I can myself. Maybe I can round up some great advice when I am faced with issues of all kinds from professional to personal.

Child Car Seat Ratings…The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

So many people ask me when they are hunting for a car seat…”what is the safest model?”.  I begin to explain how the safest car seat is the one that is used correctly and fits the child and vehicle correctly. This surprises my customers as they can’ t believe there is not a crash test rating that I can rattle off before they choose the car seat for their child! Customers often confuse Consumer Reports as having valid ratings…that is just not so.  To help parents find a safe car seat I have linked the NHTSA website here in order for customers to look at the ease of use rating on a prospective car seat.

The easier the car seat is to use, the safer it is as a person will use it correctly. Unfortunately, every 4 out of 5 car seats are used incorrectly.  Check out the site below before purchasing your car seat. After your seat is purchased, have the store you purchased it from install it if they have certifed techs on staff.  If not, check out your local fire station or state patrol as they usually have someone that can check your car seat installation. Beware…you may have to make an appointment.
